Basics of Backpacking

October 5, 2018 @ 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Come with questions to the Catskill Interpretive Center in Mt. Tremper, NY as Olivia, outdoor recreation and gear expert, goes over the essential things to know when starting out as a backpacker. She’ll show off camping equipment and talk about the kinds of things to look for when investing in your own gear from backpack to tent, sleeping bag, pad, stove, and water filtration system.

On a short hike to a campsite, learn the basics of setting up camp, Leave No Trace principles, and bear bag hangs. A great opportunity to meet others, ask questions, and practice camping skills in a controlled environment. Feel free to bring your own gear to try out, whether it’s a new backpack you want help sizing or a new pair of boots to break in.
