Windham High Peak & Burnt Knob Escarpment Hike

Join Catskill 3500 Club Hike Leader and Club President Michael Bongar on this taste of the Escarpment. This will be a shuttle hike, which means cars will be placed so that we hike from point A to point B.
Event Duration: 5.7miles, 5 hours
Level of Difficulty: Moderate
Leader: Michael Bongar
Bring: Lunch/ snacks, water/ drink , sunscreen, insect repellent, backpark, wicking sports attire, wicking sports attire, sturdy hiking shoes or boots, trekking poles if you use them, warm layers as it might be chilly on the escarpment.

Group size is limited to 12 so please register early. PLEASE contact the leader and cancel if you are not able to come as others may want to take your place.

Additional Information: This will be a fun moderately paced hike along the Escarpment with some great views and lots of Catskill nature and geology to explore. We move at a steady moderate pace and take time to see the views and discover nature. (We will coordinate shuttle arrangements shortly after arrival.)

Driving Directions:
From New York State Thruway Catskill (Exit 21), take a left out of the NYS Thruway entrance road. Go approximately 1/4 mile Take a right onto Route 23 West. Go approximately around 21.5 miles on Route 23. Take a left onto County Rt 65 (Main Care Gas Station on Right – Condos on left). Go approximately 0.7 miles on Route 65. Take left onto Rt 65A. Go approximately 0.3 miles on Rt 65A .Continue Straight onto Rt 40 after stop sign. Go approximately 1.8 miles on Rt 40. Take a left onto Rt 56 (3-way intersection in Maplecrest). Follow Rt 56 approximately 4.2 miles Continue off the asphalt road to the gravel road until you reach the DEC parking lot. Do NOT block driveway in the DEC parking lot – this goes to someone’s house. Do NOT drive beyond the DEC parking lot – this is someone’s driveway. Land around the DEC parking lot and the beginning of the trail is PRIVATE land. Please respect private landowners.
From NYS Thruway Saugerties (Ext 20) in Saugerties, take 32 North for 6 miles, keep straight onto NY-32A / Route 32A for 1.3 miles, keep right to stay on NY-32A / Route 32A for 0.6 miles, bear left onto NY-23A / Route 23A for 5.5 miles, turn right onto County Route 25 / County Hwy-25 for 2.7 miles, bear right onto County Route 23C and stay on it for 4 miles, turn right onto Maplecrest Rd / County Hwy-40 for 1.9 miles, turn right onto County Hwy-56 (Big Hollow Rd) for 4.2 miles until the end and park in DEC parking lot at the end. Do NOT block driveway in the DEC parking lot – this goes to someone’s house. Do NOT drive beyond the DEC parking lot – this is someone’s driveway. Land around the DEC parking lot and the beginning of the trail is PRIVATE land. Please respect private landowners.
