Hike the Plattekill State Forest Road

Join Peter Manning, Catskill Mountain Club, Luke Van Der Veur, Forester, NYSDEC, and Mike Kudish, PhD and Forest Historian, for a through-hike of the Plattekill State Forest Road. This road, constructed about 18 years ago, became overgrown but was recently cleared by a group of CMC volunteers. We will do a 5.5-mile point-to-point hike beginning at the Bovina access point and concluding at the New Kingston access point. This will require preplacement of vehicles and shuttling. Contact Peter Manning via email or phone to register and coordinate. Discussion topics include forest succession, unit management planning, and balancing recreation interests in the Catskill Park and region.

Driving Directions: To reach the beginning of the hike in Bovina, take State Route 28 west from Margaretville 4.9 miles; turn right on County Hwy 6 and continue 5.25 miles to New Kingston. Leaving New Kingston, stay left, following the signs from Bovina. From New Kingston, go 4.9 miles; at the base of the hill make a HARD right onto Mountain Brook Rd. Continue 2.4 miles to the height of land (the last half mile is an unimproved road). From Delhi, take Route 28 to Bovina and turn left on County Hwy 6. At 5.37 miles bear left onto Mountain Brook Road and continue 2.4 miles to the height of land (the last half mile is an unimproved road).
To reach the New Kingston access point (for car preplacement) follow the directions above from Margaretville to New Kingston. At the north edge of New Kingston bear right onto Thompson Hollow Road. Go 2.1 miles and turn left onto Harold Roberts Rd (also know as Thompson Hollow Rd); go 1.9 miles and the State Forest Access parking is on the right. To reach this location from Delhi, take State Route 28 to Bovina, turn left on County Hwy 6, go 10.2 miles to New Kingston, turn left onto Thompson Hollow Road and follow the directions above (from New Kingston to the State Forest Access parking).
