Giant Ledge, Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop & Guided Hike | October 6, 2022

Join New York-New Jersey Trail Conference’s Trail Steward Program Coordinator, Myra Romano, on a leisurely hike up to Giant Ledge in the Slide Mountain Wilderness. Along the way, we’ll talk about how to enjoy the outdoors responsibly and respectfully, focusing on Leave No Trace principles that can be applied when hiking and backpacking in wilderness areas across New York State. We’ll take in the many views atop Giant Ledge and visit the campsites before heading back to our cars. Round-trip hike distance: 3.5 miles. Elevation gain: 970 feet.
Event Duration: 3.5 miles, 5 hours
Level of Difficulty: Moderate-Difficult

Bring: Lunch, water, snacks, rain gear, sun protection, extra layers, sturdy hiking shoes, and any personal medication or first aid that might be needed.

PLEASE contact the leader and cancel if you are not able to come as others may want to take your place.
Group size is limited to 10 so register early.
Dogs allowed: Yes, only with permission of event leader.
Additional Information: The terrain of this hike is very rocky and steep in some sections. You may be using your hands to scramble up short sections of trail, and comfortable shoes with good traction are required. There is no cell service at the trailhead. We will be meeting in the parking area at the sharp bend in the road.

Driving Directions: From NYS Thruway, take the exit for Kingston and head west on NY-28. After 30.8 miles, turn left onto Oliverea Rd. After 7.3 miles, the parking area will be on the right side at a sharp bend in the road.
